Pass Your IREX — Study Anywhere With Australia's Audio-First Instrument Rating Theory Course

Instrument Rating Exam

The complete Instrument Rating Exam theory course and practice exam system, designed for pilots who don't have time to sit at a desk.
For $89, you get around 6 hours of IREX theory audiobook, audio practice exams, and randomised written practice exams — everything you need to build the knowledge foundation for your instrument rating exam, in a format that fits your life.
Studying for the instrument rating exam shouldn't mean choosing between flying, working, and sitting at a desk with a stack of textbooks and an AIP. This course delivers the full IREX theory syllabus as a professional audiobook — around 6 hours of content — so you can study while you commute, exercise, walk the dog, or do anything else that leaves your ears free.

But we didn't stop at audio. This is a complete exam preparation system — audiobook theory, guided audio practice exams, and randomised written practice exams — all in one place, all built around the CASA Part 61 MOS syllabus.

The IREX is an open-book exam, but don't let that fool you. With approximately 40 questions across 3.5 hours, you need to know the theory well enough to apply it under pressure — and know your references well enough to find the right page without wasting time. Around one in four candidates still fails. This course is designed to make sure you walk into that exam room ready.

The Reality of IREX Study

You've got your PPL or CPL. You're probably flying commercially, instructing, or building hours — and somehow you also need to master IFR flight planning, alternate requirements, fuel calculations under Part 91 and Part 135, GNSS system architecture, performance-based navigation, instrument approach procedures, meteorological interpretation, and the full breadth of IFR operational knowledge. All of it examinable, all of it scenario-based, and all of it requiring you to navigate a substantial pile of reference documents under a 3.5-hour time limit.

Traditional textbooks assume you have hours of uninterrupted desk time. Most pilots working toward their instrument rating don't.

The IREX has a pass rate of around 76%, and CASA's identified weak areas remain consistent year after year: fuel determination, DAP procedures, alternate planning, weather interpretation, and navigation aid requirements. Even experienced pilots stumble when the exam requires precise cross-referencing between the AIP, approach plates, legislation, and charts. The theory is challenging, and the application under exam conditions is even more so.

We built this course to fix that.

Read the Exam Guide

Understand the exam format, the permitted materials rules, the VH-OZY aircraft and its equipment, and CASA's weak areas. This is your roadmap.

Assemble Your Exam Materials

Choose Airservices or Jeppesen, and start gathering your legislation, AIP, DAPs, ERSA, charts, and navigation equipment. Do this early — sourcing and organising these documents takes time.

Listen to the Audiobook

Work through the full 6 hours of theory at least once. Commute, gym, housework — wherever fits your routine. Keep your reference documents nearby when you can, and look things up as you listen.

Revisit and Reinforce

Go back to individual chapters on topics that need more attention. Alternate planning, fuel calculations, GNSS architecture, and PBN specifications tend to need the most revision.

Audio Practice Exams

Test your understanding with guided question-and-answer walkthroughs in audio format.

Written Practice Exams

Start with Learning Mode to build confidence, then move to Exam Simulation to test yourself under timed conditions with your full set of reference materials. Aim for consistent scores above 80% before booking your real exam.
